Socially Determined: Using the CHNA Process to Address Social Determinants of Health in Rural Communities

July 8, 2021 @ 8:45 am - 9:45 am

This program is supported by the Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under grant number U2WRH33290 Medicare Rural Hospital Flexibility (Flex) Program as part of the Mississippi Office of Rural Health and Primary Care (MORHPC), $488,194 and 0% finance with nongovernmental sources. Rural determinants of health (RDOH) are an essential consideration when implementing community health improvement strategies. Mississippi is one of the most rural states in the country, with 79% of the counties classified as rural as defined by the federal Office of Management and Budget.  Rural determinants of health include issues of geography and topography in addition to socioeconomic factors that may serve to disadvantage health access and health outcomes in rural populations. This presentation, held in person at the MHA Conference Center in Madison, will provide an executive-level overview of how the community health needs assessment (CHNA) planning process can help all hospitals –  not just public and nonprofit hospitals – create a plan to address health needs in your community.

Shawn Rossi, DHA, FACHE, serves as vice president of communication and member engagement at the Mississippi Hospital Association. She holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in English from the University of Southern Mississippi and a doctor of health administration degree from the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
